Notes on the beat
State policy jobs — analysts, program coordinators, special assistants, commissioners' staff — are the steadiest lane in Alaska public-sector work. Unlike legislative and campaign jobs, they don't evaporate in May. Nearly all of them post on Workplace Alaska, the state's central hiring portal, and nearly all are scored against written minimum qualifications, which means how you write your application matters more than who you know.
The portal has its own vocabulary — PCNs, ranges and steps, bargaining units, "position open to." We wrote a plain-English decoder: Workplace Alaska, explained.
