Job Summary

The Matanuska Susitna Borough is currently recruiting for a Water Safety Instructor I (WSI I) or a Lifeguard with the drive to obtain WSI I certification within one year of hire. The current starting pay for WSI I is $22.96hr. Lifeguard current starting pay is $21.85hr.

WSI I: This position is responsible for providing water safety instruction, pool safety, quality customer service, and janitorial duties at Borough aquatic facilities.

Lifeguard: This position is responsible for providing lifeguarding services, pool safety, quality customer service, and janitorial duties at the Borough aquatics facility.

Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork.

E1 - E5 - DOE

Minimum Requirements

WSI I:

Less than one year of experience.

Possession of American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer; American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid; and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certifications.

Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen and physical.

Lifeguard:

Less than one year of experience in a similar position in an employed or volunteer role, sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, along with the ability to demonstrate proficient swimming skills.

Must successfully complete American Red Cross Lifeguarding course to include valid Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certificate.

Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen and physical.

Duties/Responsibilities

WSI I

Instructs swimming lessons, Water Safety Instructor training, and other pool programs providing corrective feedback.

Completes required reports to include RC Instructor Activity Report, RC Instructor Student Assessment Sheet; and Student Assessments.

Assists with opening and closing the facility.

Provides lifeguarding services.

Enforces pool rules and regulations; educates pool patrons and observers about pool safety.

Provides customer service to pool patrons; provides information and assistance; admits patrons and collects fees; maintains usage records.

Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and proper function of the facility.

Monitors and regulates pool and hot tub conditions to prevent accidents and minimize hazardous conditions.

Administers emergency first aid/CPR/AED as needed.

Completes incident and accident reports.

Registers patrons for classes and programs.

Collects money, makes change, and operates cash register.

Performs related duties.

Lifeguard

Responds to water emergencies and performs water rescues; provides lifeguarding services.

Enforces pool rules and regulations; educates pool patrons and observers about pool safety.

Provides customer service to pool patrons; provides information and assistance; admits patrons and collects fees; maintains usage records.

Assists in opening and closing the facility.

Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and proper function of the facility.

Monitors and regulates pool and hot tub conditions; calibrates chemical readings and adjusts equipment accordingly.

Administers emergency first aid/CPR/AED as needed.

Completes incident and accident reports.

Registers patrons for classes and programs.

Provides patrons with information and assistance.

Collects money, makes change, and operates cash register.

Inspects facility and reports unsafe conditions.

Participates in Lifeguard training exercises.

Performs related duties.
