Summary or Purpose

Responds to emergencies and performs duties related to fire suppression

,

rescue

,

and emergency care during ground ambulance transport, in accordance with level of training and Department SOP' s

.

Assists with supervision of station operations; assist with overseeing assigned volunteer members and departmental training. Expected to serve as the incident commander in the absence of the Village Fire Chief. This position is a regular member of the North Slope Borough Fire Department and is authorized to act under Alaska Statue 18.70.

Respond to emergencies and perform firefighting, rescue

,

emergency medical duties as assigned.

Operate, clean and inspect emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools, equipment and facilities.

Maintain training skills and certification through participation in applicable education opportunities and training as required.

Inspects and maintains specialized firefighter self-contained breathing apparatus, Air pack units, and other breathing and air filtration equipment.

Coordinates refilling of breathing air and medical oxygen cylinders in community of assignment

,

and supports Slope­ wide efforts if breathing air and medical oxygen systems.

Works with Village Fire Chief and Department leadership to oversee EMS operations of the department, making recommendations as necessary

.

Performs Quality Assurance activities with the Village Fire Chief and Department leadership by reviewing patient care reports and fire incident reports for accuracy, compl

e

teness, compliance, and ensuring standards are met.

Assist Department training efforts to assure training course is taught according to lesson plan and as scheduled.

Ensure apparatus checks are completed and maintain both inventory and mechanical check-off sheets on a scheduled basis.

Serve as the station HIPAA compliance officer and ensure that staff received required annual trainings. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of NSB Fire Department policies  and   procedures,  firefighting  and   emergency  services techniques and procedures, and related safety and legal issues.

Knowledge of fire ground operations safety.

Knowledge of pre-hospital emergency medical care practices.

Knowledge and ability to use emergency response vehicles, specialized fire  department  and   personal protective equipment and gear, rescue equipment and emergency medical equipment and tools.

Knowledge of methods and techniques to present training programs.

Skill in assessing emergency medical patient care needs and providing emergency medical   care,  including  work in aero-medical environment.

Skill in planning, organizing and scheduling technical training classes.

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required

High School graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and work-related experience.

Valid Alaska Driver's License that meets the North Slope Borough insurance criteria.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider certification, of Alaska EMS equivalent. Emergency Trauma Technician certification.

Alaska Rural Firefighter Operations certification or Department approved equivalent. ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 Training

Ability to obtain American Heart Association Basis Life Support Instructor certification, or Alaska EMS equivalent, within six months from course availability.

Three years of paid or volunteer arctic firefighter experience.

One year of supervisory work experience.
