Job Description

Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of the Borough’s bus stops.  Weekend and shift work will be required.

Examples of Duties

Perform minor semi skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi skilled trades work.

Operate mowers, trucks, steam cleaners, brooms, pressure washers, buffers, washers, tow trailer, and other equipment as needed.

Use hand power tools such as saws, drills, hammers, snow blowers, generators and various other equipment when required to perform the task.

Perform custodial work such as required and assigned, including: change light bulbs and fluorescent tubes;  dump garbage and reline cans with liners; replenish supplies; sweep; empty ash cans; wash windows and walls; clean roofs; clean rain gutters.

Collect and dispose of solid waste from bus shelters; pick up litter from premises. Handling and disposing of hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens with care. Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and procedures.

Provide excellent customer service to the public and other Borough employees.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:

Assist with cleaning and detailing vehicle fleet.

Assist with custodial work and minor repair of the transit facility.

Perform other duties as assigned.

May be required to work on short notice when needed, including weekends, evenings and holidays.

Qualifications

Knowledge of general facilities maintenance and operations is desired.

Recent experience and skills in power/non-power tool applications, basic plumbing, and mechanics (basic vehicle and small engine preventative maintenance desired).

Willingness to perform various job-related duties as situations require; a strong sense of teamwork; and the ability to work cooperatively with others.

Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures including all safety rules and regulations.

Physical stamina and endurance.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Must be able to hear.

Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell.

Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lift and carry items and boxes up to seventy (70) pounds.  This can be physically demanding, strenuous work.   Many duties are performed in outside weather conditions including snow, rain, wind and cold.

Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.

Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
