Job Summary

Our Retail Sales Associates will assist our guests in all aspects of retail sales in our Mercantile. This includes working in the gift shop, Cafe, and Saloon. While working in any area of the Mercantile, this position is responsible for welcoming guests, offering assistance, answering questions, and handling cash/credit transactions.

This position is also responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of all areas of the gift shop (sales areas, office areas, storage areas, and bathrooms). The role may also prepare sandwiches and other food items for sale in the coffee shop/bar. This position is located at our Skagway location.

All employees are expected to adhere to the company's standard operating procedures to ensure consistency, safety, and quality in our operations. Cooperation with these guidelines is essential for maintaining our high standards and achieving organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

Ensures guests experience the “E.X.C.U.R.S.I.O.N. of a lifetime” by being attentive to guests’ needs and questions, and notifying management of any unhappy guests.

Adheres to the company’s standard operating procedures, ensuring consistency, safety, and high-quality operations.

Communicates accurate information to appropriate staff (e.g., radioing guest counts, office communication, coordination with dock representatives).

Follows all company policies and procedures.

Performs additional tasks as needed to support the company’s goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Valid Driver’s License

Valid CPR/First Aid Certificate

Must be 21 years of age

Able to lift up to 25 lbs

Must be willing to work with dogs daily

Must not be allergic to dogs

Strong communication, customer service, and attention to detail skills.

Able to stay organized and calm under pressure in a fast-paced setting.

Basic computer skills required; POS/cash handling experience a plus.

Active, hands-on role. Must be able to:

Lift up to 25 lbs

Bend, stretch, and reach regularly

Stand or walk for 90% of the shift

Ideally 21+, though younger applicants may be considered.

Ability to obtain an Alaska Serve Safe Card and complete the TAPS course upon hire.

Ensuring timely arrivals and departures.

Adaptability:

Able to handle unclear or changing situations and respond to unexpected demands.

Capable of handling emergencies calmly and efficiently.

Leadership:

Ability to establish rapport, build trust, and coach others with clear expectations.

Working Conditions

Frequent outdoor work with possible adverse weather conditions and temperature changes.

Possible exposure to odors, including dog waste.

Exposure to noise, including consistent dog barking at dog camp.

Frequent sitting, standing, and walking.

Must be able to lift and carry buckets up to 40 lbs for 200 feet (typically no more than 30 minutes per day).
