POSITION SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to serve as a research assistant in support of a project conducted by Maniilaq Association and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to study rates of a bacteria named Haemophilus influenzae in the population in Northwest Alaska. Research assistants will receive training in and be responsible for obtaining informed consent and conducting surveys with community members. The position will be based in Kotzebue but may also include travel to communities in the region. This position reports to the Chief Medical Officer or designee.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Complete an online training program (ex CITI training) in biomedical research practices.
Receive training on recruiting participants, informed consent, administering surveys, and data entry and reporting. The goal is to enroll around 600 participants across the region.
Communicate effectively with research team including participating in meetings and compiling interim summaries of participants enrolled and samples collected.
Engage with community members around study enrollment.
Obtain, document, and safely store informed consent forms.
Coordinate collection of oropharyngeal swabs from participants by clinical staff and coordinate the safe and timely transportation of those samples to laboratory staff.
Conduct surveys with participants and document and safely store these results. Participate in data entry of survey results into secure online form.
Potentially travel to village communities in the Maniilaq Service Area to recruit participants.
Maintain confidentially of all participant data and information.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent. Must be enrolled in college, have graduated, or be pursuing higher education in some capacity. Required to be in the Maniilaq Service Area for roughly 2 months of time (exact dates yet to be determined). Must have strong communication skills and professionalism when interacting with team members and participants. Must have familiarity with basic computer and email function and be able to use Microsoft Word and Excel effectively.
