The Orthopedic Surgeon provides a broad range of orthopedic services to adult and pediatric patients and serves as a consultant for providers and patients throughout the consortium.

This position requires high level skill and decision making in the practice of orthopedic surgery, including which patients require surgery, the timing, and types of operations to perform, and the provision of preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative care. The provider supports SEARHC in its mission by providing the highest quality orthopedic care to all SEARHC patients. This position requires care of patients covered by Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

Provides comprehensive orthopedic services to inpatients and outpatients at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital to include consultative evaluations, clinical analysis and recommendations regarding complex, diverse methods of surgical and non-surgical treatments. Participates in the multidisciplinary pre-operative evaluation of potential surgical patients with significant medical co-morbidities.

Serves as orthopedic consultant for SEARHC clinicians throughout Southeast Alaska. Work includes field visits to the Ethel Lund Medical Center in Juneau and sub-regional clinics (Klawock, Haines, and Wrangell) as directed.

Ensures an appropriate surgical environment for orthopedic patients including recommendations on equipment, staffing, and training. Provides effective leadership of the operative team.

Supervises the orthopedic PA-C per Human Resource guidelines. Provides teaching and direction on patient care, works flows, and departmental policies and procedures.

Provides orthopedic consultations and on call services in the Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital emergency room as requested by medical director. Performs unscheduled, emergency surgeries when appropriate.

Coordinates orthopedic patient care and follow-up for patients having surgery at ANMC. Facilitates orthopedic referrals to tertiary centers for patients not appropriate for surgery at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital.

Serves leadership positions on standing or ad hoc committees as requested by the Medical Director. Participates in all medical staff functions as requested, to include quality assurance reviews and medical staff meetings.

Abides by medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, and clinical services policies/procedures.

Education,

Certifications, and Licenses Required

MD or DO.

Pending or active licensure by the Alaska State Medical Board (may practice under any active state license as a direct hire employee pending AK licensure).

Board certification by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

BLS required

ATLS, ACLS, and PALS preferred

Experience Required

Successful completion of an accredited orthopedic residency.

5 years or more of experience in orthopedic surgery desired.

Knowledge of

Knowledge of orthopedic surgical practice and procedures.

Knowledge of allopathic medical theories and therapies related to musculoskeletal and supportive care.

Detailed knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

Skills in

Surgical skills related to the entire range of orthopedic surgery practice.

Surgical skills related to emergency practice, particularly orthopedic trauma care.

Supervision and teaching.

Verbal and written communication.

Ability to

Work independently in caring for critically ill patients.

Coordinate care through the entire surgical team. Provide smooth transitions in patient care to the Hospitalist team as appropriate for medically complex patients with significant co-morbidities. Communicate with primary care physicians with regard to surgical outcomes and discharge instructions.

Communicate with patients and staff in an open, caring, and supportive fashion.
