POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the

EMS Program Manager the Community EMT position is responsible for responding

and assisting in medical emergencies including but not limited to the

pre-clinic setting. The person hired into this position is responsible for

maintaining overall readiness of all emergency equipment used in an emergency medical

response, such as stretchers, longboards, AEDs, trauma bags, portable oxygen

and when applicable ambulance and ambulance supplies. EMTs may work alongside clinic

staff within standard operating procedures (SOPs) and may assist in-facility when

needed. The Community EMT must maintain a valid State of Alaska or National

Registry, EMT license and is responsible for utilizing in and out of region

resources to achieve renewal. EMTs must maintain a personal level of readiness

and self-care that facilitates a rapid response in service area while on duty. The

Community EMT is responsible for mentoring, training, and leading community

volunteers who are authorized to assist in emergency events. Effective

candidates will have strong leadership and communication skills and is able to

direct and manage resources in dynamic environments while prioritizing the

safety of first responders, volunteers, and bystanders.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND

RESPONSIBILITIES

1.

Make critical

judgements in the delivery of an emergency medical response that places an

emphasis on the safety of responders, bystanders and community volunteers.

2.

Maintain a professional,

physical, and emotional level of readiness that enables rapid response to medical

emergencies in community upon notice of emergency medical event.

3.

Ensure emergency

medical equipment is organized and in good working order through weekly,

monthly or daily checks. If equipment is not in proper working order submit

maintenance requests or requests for restocking/replacing supplies and

equipment.

4.

Provide emergency

medical care to patients following standard operating procedures (SOPs)

established and adopted by Maniilaq Association’s Medical Director/Regional EMS

Medical Director.

5.

Manage resources

and coordination of overall emergency medical response pre-facility. This

includes directing volunteer and community members on scene and working alongside

Community Health Aids to deliver the highest possible standard of care.

6.

Document EMS

responses and care rendered through the established electronic patient care

reporting system (ePCR) within 24 hours of completion of any EMS response.

7.

Demonstrate an

attitude of continuous improvement and learning by participating in run

reviews, regional trainings and exercises focused on improving processes and

quality of care for patients.

8.

Exercises

leadership qualities and behaviors at all times on-and-off duty representing

professionalism and excellence expected in a first responder roles.

9.

Facilitate and

assist in the development and delivery of training opportunities (e.g. CPR

First Aid) to community members, volunteers and medical/clinic staff.

10.

Provides

communication to EMS Program Manager/Office of obstacles and challenges

observed that prevent efficient delivery of patient care during emergency

medical responses.

11.

Complete

independent, online, and in person educational opportunities that result in the

issuance of continuing medical education credits to maintain EMT certification

and ensure quality patient care.

12.

Participate and

assist in community health and educational initiatives as assigned to encourage

EMS development at the local system level.

13.

Other duties as

assigned by the Program Manager in support of departmental goals.

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EMT I:

Must have High School Diploma

or equivalent. Must be eligible to be certified as a State of Alaska EMT as

outlined in

7 AAC 26.950

.

Must be willing and able to obtain EMT certification within 6 months of hire if

not certified EMT at time of hire. Have a valid driver’s license and be eligible

to be covered under Maniilaq’s driver’s insurance policy. Knowledge of Inupiaq

culture, language and customs preferred. Must be willing to work weekends. Must

be able to bend, kneel, stand, and perform physical tasks associated with EMS

such as lifting and moving patients; must be capable of vertically lifting a

minimum of 70 lbs, and be physically able to complete a 1 mile walk or run.

EMT II

All of the above

qualifications plus EMT II state certification.

EMT III

All of the above

qualifications plus EMT III state certification.

Paramedic:

All of the above

qualifications plus Paramedic certification.
