Under general supervision, this position oversees the safety and security of the Kodiak Community Jail and the individuals being detained. Specific responsibilities include: supervising prisoners; booking and releasing prisoners; conducting searches of prisoners and the facility; dispensing meals and medications; cleaning and disinfecting jail facilities; monitoring individuals assigned to both sentenced and pre-sentenced electronic monitoring programs; and ensuring the jail has adequate supplies.

The Municipal Corrections Officer must be characterized by unquestionable personal and professional character and integrity, be free of cultural and ethnic bias, maintain a strong ethical code in both personal and professional life, desire to diligently protect and serve the community through courage, compassion and respect, and display personal conduct above reproach.

The Police Department provides quality law enforcement services to the community and assistance to citizens who request services that may be related to the well-being of life, health, and property. The Municipal Corrections Officer must perform these duties in a manner that reflects positively on the City and the Department.

Examples Of Essential Duties

Maintaining the care, custody, and control of all individuals being detained in the Jail; monitoring behavior to mitigate health and safety concerns, escape attempts, and/or other related activities; uses verbal de-escalation, defensive tactics and physical restraints to maintain the safety and security of detainees, staff, and/or other personnel within the facility.

Conducts security checks, which include: screening visitors; monitoring dormitories for inappropriate activity; monitoring facilities for safety or security risks; making rounds at specified intervals; conducting prisoner headcounts; supervising the distribution of inmate meals and medication; and/or performing related activities.

Books new individuals into the facility, which include: verifying warrants, criminal charges, and protective custody holds, conducting strip searches when necessary; fingerprinting inmates; taking photographs; receiving and accounting for monies and personal effects; and determining bed assignments.

Releases individuals from the facility, which include: verifying bail procedures and court documents; completing necessary court paperwork and issuing bail receipts when applicable; ensuring the initial booking procedure is complete; and ensuring individual receives all their personal property.

Supervises individuals assigned to sentenced and pre-sentenced electronic monitoring programs, to include: installing or issuing equipment; monitoring the whereabouts of offenders and reporting violations; making contact with offenders to have them report for urinalysis testing; and performing data entry related to monitoring activities.

Create and maintain jail records, including jail logs, booking files, medication dispensation logs and reports regarding inmate activity to include the submission of written reports detailing all jail incidents resulting in bodily injury, property damage, or requiring criminal investigation.

Interact with the public in a courteous, helpful and professional manner.

Inspects and keeps records of all visitors to the facility.

Performs first aid as needed and/or arrange for medical transport or treatment.

Cleans, disinfects, and inspects jail facilities, and ensures an adequate inventory of jail supplies are available.

Inspects mail for contraband.

Performs other duties as assigned.
