The City of Valdez is hiring a creative and organized Marketing & Communications Specialist to support program promotion and front desk operations. This temporary role works about 30 hours per week, typically Monday - Friday, 1 - 7 p.m

.

, with occasional extended evenings and weekends.

Key Responsibilities

• Create flyers, graphics, signage, and social media content using Canva.

• Manage and schedule Facebook posts and ads.

• Assist with the design and production of the tri-annual Activity Guide.

• Gather program details and maintain consistent branding.

• Provide front desk customer service and support registrations, rentals, and inquiries.

• Assist with events, outreach, and general office tasks.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18.

• Experience in graphic design, marketing, communications, customer service, recreation, or a related field.

• Proficiency with Canva or similar software.

• Strong communication, organization, and customer service skills.

• Valid driver’s license; CPR/AED and First Aid certification within one month of hire (if required).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Create flyers, social media graphics, signage, and other promotional materials using Canva.

Create and schedule Facebook content and advertisements for Department programs and events.

Assist with the design, layout, editing, and production of the tri-annual Activity Guide.

Gather program information, photos, and content from Department staff.

Maintain consistent Department branding across marketing materials.

Provide front desk customer service in person, by phone, and electronically.

Assist with program registration, facility rentals, cash handling, and general customer questions.

Assist with Department programs, events, and community outreach as needed.

Perform general office duties and maintain program and facility records.

Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.

Comply with City and Department policies and procedures.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics

Experience with Canva or similar graphic design software.

Beginner to intermediate knowledge of graphic design, layout, and marketing.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent customer service skills.

Strong attention to detail and organization.

Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in an office or recreation facility environment. Some work may occur at programs or special events, both indoors and outdoors.
