We're seeking a Marine Engineering Assistant Manager to join our team in Ketchikan, where towering mountains meet the sea and the wild Alaskan spirit thrives. Lead the engineering team that keeps Alaska’s fleet safe, reliable, and moving!

What You Will Be Doing:

As a key leader within the Alaska Marine Highway System, this position plays a vital role in keeping Alaska’s fleet safe, reliable, and moving. The Marine Engineering Assistant Manager provides daily leadership and oversight of engineering operations, coordinates a skilled team, and drives progress toward critical performance goals and long-term objectives. This position combines strategic planning with hands-on leadership—guiding employees, managing resources, addressing workplace challenges, and ensuring programs and services are delivered effectively. With significant independent supervisory authority, the position helps shape the direction of Marine Engineering, builds a reliability centric culture and contributes directly to the continued success of AMHS operations.

To be successful in this position, a candidate will need to possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Supervision:

Plans, distributes, and monitors work assignments; sets task priorities; evaluates work performance and provides feedback to others on their performance; ensures that staff are appropriately selected, utilized, and developed, and that they are treated in a fair and equitable manner. Assignments include the authority and responsibility to recommend or independently take action to employ (i.e., appoint, transfer, promote), discipline or discharge, or adjudicate grievances of direct reports.

Financial Management:

Prepares, justifies, and/or administers the budget for program areas; plans, administers, and monitors expenditures to ensure cost-effective support of programs and policies; assesses financial condition of an organization.

Organizational Awareness:

Knows the organization's mission and functions, and how its social, political, and technological systems work and operates effectively within them; this includes the programs, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of the organization.

Operations Support:

Knowledge of procedures to ensure production or delivery of products and services, including tools and mechanisms for distributing new or enhanced software.

Conflict Management:

Manages and resolves conflicts, grievances, confrontations, or disagreements in a constructive manner to minimize negative personal impact.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a license or Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) endorsement as Chief Engineer (motor vessel) unlimited.

OR

Possession of a license or MMC endorsement as First Engineer (motor vessel) unlimited and two years of licensed marine engineering experience.

OR

Possession of a license or MMC endorsement as Second Engineer (motor vessel) unlimited or Third Engineer (motor vessel) unlimited and three years of licensed marine engineering experience.

OR

Bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited college with a major in marine engineering, naval architecture, naval science, maritime operations and technology, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, or engineering management;

AND

Two years of professional experience in marine engineering or marine-engineering management including, but not limited to, vessel construction, repair, or conversion, ship systems and marine equipment design, or shipyard management.

OR

Six years of experience in maritime management or shipyard management of which three years must be professional experience in marine engineering or marine engineering management.

Special Note:

Degrees in Marine Transportation or Logistics and Intermodal Transportation are not qualifying.
