The Department of Family & Community Services is recruiting for IT System Administrator 1 in Fairbanks!

This position is open to Alaska Residents only.

What You Will Be Doing:

Provide daily support for site file and print servers, ensuring reliable access, routine maintenance, prompt issue resolution, and traveling to remote sites as needed to address on-premises issues.

Perform core Active Directory tasks—including account maintenance, group membership updates, and basic directory troubleshooting—while using PowerShell to streamline repetitive operations.

Author, test, and deploy user and computer Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to support secure and consistent configurations across the environment.

Assist with entry-level datacenter administration such as basic server provisioning, hardware handling, system monitoring, and performing scripted tasks with PowerShell.

Support WAN network operations by helping plan, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot Ethernet and Wi-Fi infrastructure, including hands-on work at remote sites to ensure stable network connectivity.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position is located in the Fairbanks office building at 751 Old Richardson Highways, within the same grounds as the Alaska Club. The office is on the third floor in a secure area of the building. Traveling to other DFCS locations will be required. DFCS-IT is a dynamic enterprise consisting of a team that is a diverse, highly technical, and collaborative group which embraces, implements, and supports the latest technologies to provide the best operational capabilities and resources to DFCS. We are customer focused and project oriented.

: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications.

Systems Integration

: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

Training in computer science, information technology, or system administration – or a similar field or professional experience – that provided knowledge of systems, networking software, hardware, protocols, and scripting/automation tools.

Special Note:

“Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.

“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.

“Training” means the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction.
