What You Will Be Doing:

In this role, you will serve as a core payroll technician on the DNR Payroll Team, responsible for the accurate and timely processing of personnel and payroll actions for the Department in full compliance with state and federal law, Personnel Rules, and multiple collective bargaining agreements. Your core responsibilities will include:

Processing personnel actions and timesheets:

You will review and enter a broad range of personnel actions in IRIS across multiple bargaining units, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable rules and statutes, before submitting them to your supervisor for certification. You will also review, work on, and certify biweekly timesheets covering all types of pay and leave.

Owning timesheet and payroll processing:

You will receive, calculate, code, and certify bi-weekly payroll, including timesheets, leave, overtime, premium pay, late adjustments, and final pay for terminations and seasonal leave without pay — ensuring accuracy and compliance with CBAs, FLSA, and state payroll policy every pay period.

Conducting payroll and leave audits:

You will research and complete audits of pay and leave discrepancies, process Notice of Pay Problem (NOPP) research assignments, calculate retroactive adjustments, and coordinate with the Division of Finance and departmental staff to resolve errors accurately and on time.

Communicating proactively with clients:

You will serve as a responsive, solutions-focused point of contact for administrative staff, timekeepers, and employees — explaining payroll procedures, counseling on pay and leave questions, and working to prevent issues from escalating into formal grievances or NOPPs.

Supporting team operations:

You will contribute to standard operating procedures, assist with end-of-year actions and mass processing tasks, and serve as a trained backup for Emergency Firefighter (EFF) payroll processing — helping build a unit that is accurate, consistent, and resilient.

Mission and Values/Culture:

The Department of Natural Resources manages Alaska’s natural resources in the best interest of Alaskans — developing, conserving, and maximizing their use consistent with the public good. DNR’s HR Payroll team supports that mission by ensuring the people who carry it out are paid accurately, treated fairly, and backed by staff who are reliable and hold themselves to a high standard. Within Support Services, we value professionalism, collaboration, and integrity.

We are building a team culture grounded in:

Accountability:

We own our work and our mistakes, and focus quickly on lessons learned.

Partnership:

We build relationships across divisions and with statewide partners that make the work better for everyone.

Technical excellence:

We hold ourselves to a high standard because the employees we serve depend on it.

Investment in people:

A well-trained, supported team delivers better outcomes — for DNR and for Alaskans

.

This is an opportunity to join a team proud of its work and the department it serves. DNR's reach spans nearly every corner of Alaska — from state parks and forestry to oil and gas and agriculture — and the HR team plays a direct role in supporting the people who carry that mission forward. We believe that taking care of our people starts with us, and we are committed to building a workplace that is both professionally rewarding and personally sustainable. The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position is located at 400 Willoughby Avenue with dedicated employee parking, where you will work as part of DNR's HR team under the direct supervision of the DNR Payroll Supervisor. The work is deadline-driven and technically demanding — with seasonal surges that require reliability, advance planning, and composure under pressure — and calls for consistent professionalism in every interaction with employees, managers, union representatives, and statewide partners. You can expect:

A collaborative, solutions-focused HR team environment.

Regular engagement with statewide DOA partners and DNR division leadership.

A convenient downtown location with outdoor spaces for breaks and lunches, and hybrid telework possibilities.
