HOMICIDE UNIT SERGEANT - Range 37 / APD

Job Information

Open to any current sworn employee working within the Anchorage Police Department, either presently at the rank of Police Sergeant or eligible for promotion from the current Sergeant eligibility list.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current contract between the Municipality of anchorage and the APDEA.

Example of Duties

Anchorage Police Sergeants provide direction and coordinate the activities of officers on an assigned shift or within an assigned unit; including briefings, uniform and equipment inspections, assignment of duties, managing major crime scene and tactical situations, case report review, maintaining duty rosters, investigating complaints against subordinate officers, preparing performance evaluations and other duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

Supervise, direct, control, inspect, and maintain discipline of personnel in the Homicide and Cold Case Units. Review, prioritize, and assign cases received via police reports, crime stopper tips, or any other reports of criminal activity involving Homicides, OIS incidents, In-Custody Deaths, Adult Kidnappings or Adult Missing Persons and (Cold Case) Sexual Assaults. Supervise criminal case investigations of crimes involving Homicides, OIS incidents, In-Custody Deaths, Adult Kidnappings or Adult Missing Persons and (Cold Case) Sexual Assaults. Review all death investigations. Coordinate with other APD Detective Units, other law enforcement agencies, private industry and other groups as necessary to facilitate effective criminal investigations. Ensure assigned Detectives have the required equipment and are trained in their respective areas of responsibility. Conduct criminal investigations and internal investigations. In this capacity, ensure that the required equipment and training needs are met for the assigned detective. The Homicide Unit is a high-volume unit with a considerable workload which involves the triage of emergent cases. Flexibility and availability to include working after hours, weekends, and holiday call-outs when the need arises may be required. Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

This is a high-volume call-out unit with a considerable amount of emergent case workload. Due to the demands of this assignment, Detectives assigned to the Homicide Unit are not eligible for SWAT or the Major Crime Scene Team.  Participation in other special units may be considered.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

If selected from the Sergeant eligibility list, the applicant must complete the promotional process prior to assignment to the position.

Must have 3 years of experience as a sergeant with the Anchorage Police Department

Must be able to perform all functions of a Police Officer

Additional Important Information

The APD Internal Selection Process will be utilized. The Internal Selection Process includes evaluating and confirming applicant information and developing a ranked list by the following factors:

Oral Board (minimum 60% passing score)

Disciplinary Review

Secondary Discipline Review will occur at time of transfer. (The list will be re-ranked, if necessary, to account for both new discipline and expired discipline.)

The eligibility list for the Homicide Unit Sergeant assignment is good for one (1) year from the date following the conclusion of the selection process, when the Certified Eligibility List is published.

An applicant that may meet the minimum qualifications during the life of this certification list but is currently ineligible due to prior assignment or length of service is still encouraged to apply to be put on the eligible list for future consideration with a date of eligibility.

Employees not maintaining Unit standards are subject to reassignment at the discretion of the Chief of Police, in accordance with the APDEA CBA.
