HOMICIDE DETECTIVE (Police Officer) - Range 35/36 / APD

Job Information

Open to any current sworn employee working within the Anchorage Police Department (APD), working as a Detective or an officer who has passed the 2026 Detective Test.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

Example of Duties

Anchorage Police Officers/Senior Police Officers perform a wide range of police services and a variety of tasks including; maintain order, enforce codes and ordinances, identification and apprehension of violators within the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA). Respond to complaints and requests for police assistance and intervene in various situations as required. Promote safety and wellbeing through the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws in a manner consistent with the mission and goals of the MOA. Conduct preliminary investigations; collect and preserve evidence. Ability to coordinate with other agencies, maintain records and daily reports; prepare cases for court testimony and testify in court as required. Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

Conduct detailed investigations into homicides, missing person investigations, child/infant deaths, suspicious deaths, suspicious suicides, kidnappings, officer involved shootings, in custody deaths, and crimes that cause life-threatening injuries. Investigate criminal cases, interview witnesses and victims, collect and preserve evidence, interrogate suspects, apprehend suspects, prepare and serve search warrants, testify in court, maintain accurate records and daily activity reports, prepare court case for prosecution, review and evaluate cases involving juveniles, train other personnel in various areas of police work, assist patrol officers and peers with ongoing investigations, assist the general public with information and provide direction and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies in research of problem areas. Perform other related duties as assigned.

This is a high-volume call-out unit with a considerable amount of emergent case workload. Due to the demands of this assignment, Detectives assigned to the Homicide Unit are not eligible for SWAT or the Major Crime Scene Team.  Participation in other special units may be considered.

Detectives are responsible for maintaining a professional working relationship including open dialogue and communication with the supervisor, their co-workers and employees of other partner agencies. Utilize a team-concept positive attitude with high standards of performance in support of the operational function of the Anchorage Police Department. Work effectively alone and/or in a team capacity.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Must be a current sworn employee working within the Anchorage Police Department.

Must possess a minimum of three

years as a Police Officer with the Anchorage Police Department.

Must be able to perform all functions of a Police Officer.

Must be available for call-out at any time.

Additional Important Information

The APD Internal Selection Process will be utilized.  The Internal Selection Process includes evaluating and confirming applicant information and developing a ranked list by the following factors:

Oral Board (minimum 60% passing score).

Discipline

Secondary Discipline Review will occur at time of transfer.  (The list will be re-ranked, if necessary, to account for both new discipline and expired discipline.)

The eligibility list for the Homicide Detective assignment is good for one (1) year from the date the certified eligibility list is published.

Applicants must have completed any probationary period for their current position to be selected. An applicant that may meet the minimum qualifications during the life of this certification list but is currently ineligible due to probation, prior assignment or length of service is still encouraged to apply to be put on the eligible list for future consideration with a date of eligibility.

Employees not maintaining Unit standards are subject to reassignment at the discretion of the Chief of Police in accordance with the APDEA CBA.

Sworn employees assigned to the Homicide Unit, when subjected to APDEA CBA Article VII, Section 14, will be required to participate with Standby Requirements on a rotational basis by seniority.

All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Appointment to this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska driver's license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. Military Service Interview Preference

Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
