The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting

for a Fishery Biologist 3 located in Juneau/Douglas, Alaska!

What You Will Be Doing:

This position serves as the Program Leader for the Southeast Alaska Marine Harvest Studies (MHS) Program, which collects information on the catch, harvest, and effort of the sport fishery, which is used to help shape and manage fisheries for salmon and groundfish stocks in the Southeast region. This position provides sport fishery information to the Board of Fisheries, ADF&G staff, other fishery management agencies, and the public. Duties include: coordinates the operations of the Southeast Alaska MHS program; monitors the sport fisheries information inseason to achieve sport fishing management objectives and data obligations; evaluates the program priorities, efficiency, and effectiveness in meeting regional data needs while supervising program staff and managing program budgets.

The position is key to evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of the sampling program and supervises a cohesive team that collectively makes up the marine harvest studies program and interacts with the larger regional management team.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

The position is located at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Regional Office in Douglas, Alaska. The office is within walking distance of the Treadwell Ditch and Mount Jumbo (Bradley) trails both offering a moderate chance to view wildlife and in some locations beautiful panoramic views of downtown Juneau. In addition, the office is in walking distance of the Savikko Park, Sandy Beach, and Mike Pusich Douglas Harbor Boat Launch Ramp offering boat access to Gastineau Channel and the local marine fishery. A person in this position would have immediate access to the regional coordinators for research, access, and enhancement along with the regional supervisor and regional administrative staff that are also located in the same office. Who We Are Looking For:

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge and experience with Pacific salmon and groundfish research and management for recreational(sport) fisheries and their issues;

Knowledge and working experience with the collection and usage of data and information provided by three ADF&G Division of Sport Fish programs (Marine Harvest Studies program, Statewide Harvest Studies(SWHS),and the salt water charter log book program) to address sport fishery management issues in Southeast Alaska;

Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, complex technical information in a logical and effective manner to a wide variety of audiences;

Knowledge and experience with the Alaska Board of Fisheries and the Pacific Salmon Treaty process and providing analyses and summarized information in tables, figures, and reports;

Working experience analyzing fishery data and presenting this data in technical and management reports;

The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with division and department staff, private organizations, federal and state agencies and others; and

Experience in supervising fisheries biologists and evaluating performance.

First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified, training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;

AND

One year of full performance professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Fish Culturist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

•  at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
