The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting

for a Fishery Biologist 1/2 located in Palmer, Alaska!

What you will be doing:

This is a highly dynamic and rewarding, permanent 12-month Flex 1/2 position located in Palmer, Alaska. This position is responsible for planning and implementing field and office activities associated with the collection of data for fishery research and management as it pertains to invasive northern pike in Southcentral Alaska. While most of the focus of this position will be on invasive northern pike in the Mat-Su region, periodic assignments regarding invasive pike and other aquatic invasive species in other areas of Southcentral Alaska are likely. The incumbent, under supervision, will be responsible for leading the installation and maintenance of field camps, navigating various rivers, streams, and lakes via motorized watercraft, operating snowmachines in remote and harsh environments, utilizing various fish trapping techniques, collecting and recording various fish data, collecting biological samples, analyzing data, drafting/authoring reports and operational plans, and assisting with the planning and execution of invasive northern pike eradication projects using rotenone.

This position works directly with area research biologists and contributes to the department’s missions and goals by supporting projects that remove invasive northern pike from waters in Southcentral Alaska.

The working environment you can expect:

This position will be staffed out of the Palmer office. The daily work environment is dynamic and includes a mix of working at a desk in an office setting and field work. This position will require working outdoors and/or occasionally outside normal business hours and field work conditions may include operating highway vehicles and river boats, flying in single engine aircraft, operating snow machines, hiking in wilderness areas, wading in swift currents, and working in inclement weather. Public presentations and travel to conferences and trainings are a component of this position. Requires travel to remote field camps (normally for 3 days to 2 weeks at a time).

Who we are looking for:

Our ideal candidate will possess knowledge and experience in the following areas.

Strong organizational, interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate daily with a variety of people including supervisors, other staff, resource managers, and the general public of all ages.

Experience leading fisheries projects including leading and training crews in collecting biological data

Summarizing biological data in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, and statistical/analytical software) for word processing, data entry, data summaries, data analysis, drafting reports, and making public presentations.

Experience operating snow machines and outboard propelled boats on rivers, small streams, and lakes; mechanical repair and maintenance experience preferred.

Ability to work independently without direct supervision to accomplish project goals and objectives.

Experience with various forms of fish capture techniques, such as gill nets, fyke nets, rod & reel, and minnow traps along with experience identifying juvenile pacific salmon and other juvenile native fishes of Alaska.
