The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting

for a Fish Culturist 2 located in Fairbanks, Alaska!

What you will be doing:

Assist in managing daily hatchery operations at the Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery, including coordinating fish production from egg take through stocking. Supervise staff, maintain production records, and lead stocking and spawning activities. Support planning, reporting, and budget tracking alongside the Hatchery Manager. This position is a flexibly staffed position but will only be hired at the Fish Culturist 2 level.

The working environment you can expect:

Based at the Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery in Fairbanks, this role combines diverse indoor hatchery operations with occasional outdoor fieldwork, including fish stocking and egg takes. Work includes day travel while stocking fish, occasional overnight travel for remote egg takes and potential offsite training opportunities. This position serves on a 4-person rotating standby roster, requiring immediate call back in case of alarms during scheduled off hours, weekends and holidays.

Who we are looking for:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

Experience in fish culture operations, preferably with cold-water salmonids and/or RAS technologies.

Knowledge of spawning, rearing, and stocking techniques

Ability to supervise staff and coordinate daily operations

Experience with data management systems (e.g., Excel, Access, SCADA)

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond to emergencies

Special Note:

A valid driver's license is required.

This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.

Ability to lift and carry more than 50 lbs.

First Aid/CPR certification required. Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

Minimum Qualifications

Fish Culturist 2:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a major in fisheries science or a closely related field,

AND

One year of experience as a fish culturist or fishery biologist. The required experience is met by service as a Fish Culturist 1 or Fishery Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

Four years of any combination of progressively responsible work experience in aquaculture or mariculture and/or post-secondary education from an accredited college (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) in aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fish biology, fisheries, fisheries resources, fisheries sciences and management, fisheries technology, marine biology, natural resource management, oceanography, or veterinary science will substitute for the required bachelor's degree.

Special Note:

Fish Culturists work in fish hatchery facilities and in fish habitat locations as required. Fishery biologists conduct or assist with fishery management or research projects in the field or laboratory requiring the examination, research, hypothesis, test design and evaluation of findings and preparation of a paper or report.

If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, do NOT apply for this position.

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy will be filled at the 2 level only.
