Base Salary Information:

Engineering Assistant 1: $33.76 Hourly (OT Eligible)

Engineering Assistant 2: $38.91 Hourly (OT Eligible)

What you will be doing:

As an Engineering Assistant 1/2 Flex (Traffic Control Coordinator), you will:

Support safe and efficient work zones by reviewing traffic control setups in DOT&PF Rights-of-Way.

Verify permittee and project-related traffic control conforms to the Alaska Traffic Manual, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and DOT&PF standards including the American with Disabilities Act.

Provide field assessments and coordinate with contractors, designers, and maintenance staff to resolve safety or operational concerns.

Help collect and document work zone traffic information that supports future engineering and planning decisions.

By bringing field realities back into our design process, you help shape future projects that are safer, more efficient, and grounded in actual field conditions.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is located in

Anchorage, Alaska.

No two days are alike! This position will work with many functional groups to assist in capital and operational challenges as they arise, while also providing safety input on future planning. Collaboration is imperative in every task—you’ll work closely with engineers, planners, maintenance crews, and external partners to improve how the surface transportation system operates for all users. This position is based in Anchorage, however regular day travel to perform inspection and conduct meetings with stakeholders is anticipated. The DOT&PF Central Region Headquarters building in located at 4111 Aviation Avenue. The office building is generally comprised of cubicle office space and organized by functional groups. Flexible work schedules and hybrid teleworking options are available.

Transportation Engineering:

Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and method applicable to planning, designing, and constructing of transportation systems including traffic analysis, signal analysis, highway capacity, pavement design, bridge construction, planning of transportation projects, environmental analysis of transportation facilities, and transportation network analysis.

Problem Solving

: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

Oral and Written Communication:

Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

Special Note:

A valid Driver's License is required.

Other desired certifications or to be gained on the job:

American Traffic Safety Services Association Traffic Control Supervisor certification.

American Traffic Safety Services Association Flagger Instructor certification.

American Traffic Safety Services Association Traffic Control Technician certification.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineering Assistant 1

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:

An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2

Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

AND

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years
