Summary or Purpose

This position supports the general mission of the Fire Department through performance of specialized tasks including, but not limited to inspection, cleaning and other work to prepare emergency response equipment and materials. Respond to emergencies within the community, performing firefighting medical care and other operational support in accordance with established roles in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and level of training.  Support other general operational requirements, including cleaning and maintenance of facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Support emergency response to fires and medical emergencies within the community to the level of training and certification.

Assist in providing support in delivery of training materials and programs, including maintenance and inventory.

Inspect, clean, and organize emergency response equipment and materials in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and as directed.

Complete inventory and insure readiness of emergency equipment and related supplies.

Support delivery of fire prevention and other community education activities to the level knowledge and skills.

Participate in training and activities to enhance capabilities as an emergency responder within the community.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of North Slope Borough Fire Department standard operating procedures.

Medical knowledge and skills to effectively support emergency response efforts of the department.

Knowledge of the Incident Management system enabling safe response within operational roles.

Knowledge and skills in the use and maintenance of emergency response equipment.

Skill in basic personal computer use to perform inventory.

Ability to work independently to complete assigned projects.

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required

High school graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education or related work experience.

One year of emergency response experience within the North Slope Borough;

Ability to obtain site-specific Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. § 265.16 within the probationary period.

Ability to obtain a Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) current certification within the probationary period.

Ability to obtain Small Quantity Handler training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. § 273.16 within the probationary period

Ability to obtain site-specific Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. 112.7 (f)(1)(2) and (3) within the probationary period.

Ability to obtain a Valid Alaska Driver’s License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria within the six-month probationary period.
