Description
The City and Borough of Juneau is seeking qualified candidates to apply for our Emergency Program Training & Exercise Coordinator position.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for someone who can manage projects, communicate clearly, and work well with different departments and partner agencies. You should be organized, comfortable coordinating multiple tasks at once, and able to build good working relationships. Experience in emergency management, public safety, or training coordination is helpful, but we welcome applicants who have gained relevant skills through work, volunteer service, or other community involvement.
The ideal candidate enjoys helping people develop their skills, coordinating logistics, and contributing to the community’s overall preparedness. Familiarity with the Incident Command System (ICS) or emergency planning is useful, but on-the-job training will be available.
THE BENEFITS OF JOINING OUR TEAM
Emergency Programs is a small, collaborative team where the work is dynamic and varies from day to day. Some days focus on developing training plans or coordinating with departments; others involve supporting exercises or helping staff get ready for emergency operations. We stay flexible, communicate openly, and work together to adapt as needs change.
You’ll be part of a high-trust environment where initiative is encouraged, and support is readily available. After successful completion of the probationary period, limited remote work may be available depending on operational needs. The position includes the full CBJ benefits package- health insurance, retirement, paid leave, and opportunities for training and professional development. It’s meaningful work with a team that values both collaboration and practical problem-solving.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position normally works Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The primary work location is City Hall, with regular work taking place in the Emergency Programs Office. The work environment is dynamic, and schedules may shift at times to support training events, exercises, meetings with partner agencies, or emergency operations. During major incidents or planned exercises, evening or weekend hours may be required. Limited remote work may be available after successful completion of the probationary period and depending on operational needs.
Typical Responsibilities
In this role, you will coordinate the City and Borough of Juneau’s (CBJ) emergency management training and exercise program. You will play a major role in implementing CBJ’s new Emergency Operations Plan, working with departments and partner organizations to translate the plan into practical procedures, tools, and training so staff can carry out their assigned responsibilities. You will maintain training plans and calendars, track task books and required certifications, and help ensure CBJ staff and partner agencies are prepared to respond during emergencies. Much of your work involves coordinating with Capital City Fire/Rescue (CCFR), the Juneau Police Department (JPD), and other departments to understand their training needs and align schedules and resources.
You will design and coordinate emergency management exercises ranging from small tabletop discussions to larger, multi-agency events, helping staff practice their roles and test procedures established under the Emergency Operations Plan. You will document lessons learned, track follow-up actions, and coordinate improvements to plans, procedures, and training. The position also supports Continuity of Operations Plans and hazard-related planning efforts.
During major incidents, you may support either the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) or Incident Command (/UC) and may fill an ICS role depending on your training and the needs of the event.
