The Department of Education & Early Development, Division of Innovation & Education Excellence is recruiting for 1 Long-Term Non-Permanent Education Specialists.

Pay will be determined based on the location of the selected applicant.

What You Will Be Doing:

The successful candidate will work with school and district personnel across the state as well as with state partners primarily via email, telephone, and teleconferencing. They will assist districts statewide but will prioritize support to rural districts that either lack or that have very limited local school behavioral health support capacity.

This dynamic position will address response and recovery related behavioral health challenges; provide statewide, regional, and local professional training on school counseling/behavioral health best practices; provide on-site and distance-delivered individual and multi-district/school professional development on topics like Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports, trauma engaged practices, social emotional learning, and self-care.

The individual must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups as well as articulating nuance in policies and procedures to stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds.   As a member of the team, position provides continuous support to cover the health and safety needs identified in schools, including crisis response. This position works closely with the other members of the DEED School Health & Safety Team to respond to crises as they arise across the state. The team also works proactively on several fronts to support and improve the mental, emotional, and physical health of Alaska’s students and educators.

Teleworking is available for this position, although occasional attendance in person may be required.

DEED offices are conveniently located either on the 9

floor of the State Office Building in downtown Juneau, or on the 8

floor of the Atwood building in Anchorage. The position has the opportunity for flexible scheduling and teleworking to promote work/life balance. There may be travel opportunities associated with this job both in and out of state.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

K-12 Public Education:

Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, methods, and practices of planning, teaching, and evaluating an assigned K-12 public education content area.  Integrates best practices with subject matter expertise to develop resources, inform policy implementation, provide technical assistance, and support continuous improvement.  Provides guidance and consultation to school districts and/or stakeholders while advancing statewide educational priorities.

Education and Training:

Knowledge of teaching, training, research, making presentations, lecturing, testing, and other instructional methods.

Planning and Evaluating:

Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and four years of professional experience in education, one year of which was as a staff advisor/specialist, administrator, supervisor or consultant in planning, developing and maintaining standards and evaluating educational and vocational curricula or educational programs in a specialized field.

Substitution: Appropriate graduate study may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the non-specialized experience to a maximum of two years.

Special Note:

Due to the duties assigned to a majority of these positions, applicants may be required to possess an Alaska Teacher Certificate at the time of employment and be required to maintain certification as a condition of employment. Specific endorsements may also be required. Documentation is included in the file of affected positions.
