Job Summary:

The Director of Development and Community Relations plans and implements a development and fundraising program to provide short- and long-term needs of the organization.  This position is responsible for fundraising, donor relations, and seeking local grants in efforts to promote the brand, mission, and vision of Bean’s Cafe, Inc. Duties include implementing a development plan, donor database maintenance, and grant management. The Director of Development and Community Relations attends public meetings and community events regularly.

Supports Vision:

The Director of Development and Community Relations ensures that the work and vision of Bean’s Cafe is promoted by increasing donor relations and partnerships.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Oversees the Development departmental staff.

Assigns, plans, and oversees the work of the development programs.

Handles performance reviews and disciplinary actions/terminations as needed in accordance with organizational policies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Works with the CEO and COO to determine the mission, purpose, and priorities of the organization.

Research new potential sources of, and applies for, local grants and public funding annually.

Manages reporting functions of subsequent funding requirements.

Oversees and tracks the grant process and maintains records of receipts and disbursements of funds in collaboration with the Finance department.

Creates, maintains, and updates a development plan on behalf of the organization.

Sets annual monetary goals and budgets according to short- and long-term goals.

Maintains a list and database of potential financial donors including corporations, foundations, and individuals.

Produces relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to previous donors and the public.

Ensure policies and procedures for donor stewardship are upheld.

Collaborates with other departments when necessary to achieve the goals, mission, and vision of Bean’s Cafe.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Creates and executes outreach in various forms to include social media, email, and printed outreach.

Manages social media schedule and coordinates postings with development team.

Analysis of social media campaign success and implements modifications to extend reach.

Leads community outreach and fundraising including coordination of Empty Bowl.

Provides monthly reporting to CEO detailing success, challenges, and funding pipeline.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Ability to understand the mission of Bean’s Cafe, Inc. and operationalize the goals and mission.

Extensive knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles.

Evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, knowledge, experience, and judgment.

Strong business acumen and the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness.

Exhibit strong interpersonal and management skills.

Exhibit consistent, transparent, and accurate communication with the CEO, and other management staff, verbally and through accurate reporting.

Excellent management and supervisory skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and desktop publishing software.

Knowledge of tax planning principles and techniques that favor charitable giving.

Comfortable navigating changes in a positive and mission driven manner.

Ability to work flexible schedule depending on organizational needs, including weekends and holidays.

Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree of Business or Marketing, or similar field required.

Master’s degree is preferred.

At least 5-10 years’ experience in development division at a senior level. Understanding direct mail, annual giving, donor recruitment and retention, bequests, and how to integrate development messaging with communications is critical.

Five years of experience working in nonprofit organizational management is highly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift 50 pounds from the ground up.

Must be able to climb stairs.

Must have manual dexterity sufficient to use technology, office equipment and supplies, etc.
