Open to any current sworn employee working within the Anchorage Police Department (APD), working as a Detective or an officer who has passed the 2026 Detective Test

This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) Union and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the APDEA.

Example of Duties

Anchorage Police Officers/Senior Police Officers perform a wide range of police services and a variety of tasks including; maintain order, enforce codes and ordinances, identification and apprehension of violators within the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA). Respond to complaints and requests for police assistance and intervene in various situations as required. Promote safety and wellbeing through the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws in a manner consistent with the mission and goals of the MOA. Conduct preliminary investigations; collect and preserve evidence. Ability to coordinate with other agencies, maintain records and daily reports; prepare cases for court testimony and testify in court as required. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

Participate in a multi-agency task force assignment that maximizes federal, state, and local law enforcement resources. The primary emphasis of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) task force position is to disrupt the illicit drug trade affecting Anchorage by immobilizing targeted violators and targeted organizations by conducting undercover operations when appropriate and engage in other traditional methods of investigation in order that the Task Force’s activities will result in effective prosecution before the courts of the United States and the State of Alaska.

The DEA Task Force is a team-concept unit and requires a positive attitude and high standards of performance.  You must be able to clearly communicate both written and verbally.  Extensively utilizes creative problem solving and effective investigative skills, general knowledge of police procedures, Alaska criminal law, Federal criminal law, and functional knowledge of the APD Regulations/Procedures Manuals.  Also be able to discharge duties independently with discretion and confidentiality utilizing rational decision making and sound judgment.  Will be expected to cultivate, recruit, and manage confidential human sources/informants and conduct complex multi-faceted drug investigations.  Experience in bringing complex projects to completion, working under strict deadlines and multi-agency taskings.

This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with the APD patrol, detective divisions, and other federal and state agencies. You will be expected to evaluate current APD criminal investigations for potential federal prosecution and coordinate with the corresponding officer(s)/detective(s) and determine an outcome. This outcome should achieve maximum coordination and cooperation in bringing to bear the combined resources of the participating agencies aimed at reducing violent crime in our community.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Must be a current sworn employee working within the Anchorage Police Department at the rank of Police Officer.

Must be able to perform all functions of a Police Officer.

Must possess a minimum of three

years of law enforcement experience with the Anchorage Police Department.

Applicants must have completed any probationary period for their current position to be selected.

Additional Important Information

A mandatory transfer will be required after five (5) years within the position.

The APD Internal Selection process will be utilized.  The Internal Selection Process includes evaluating and confirming applicant information and developing a ranked list by the following factors:

Oral Board – minimum 60% passing score.

Discipline Review

Internal Background Review

Review of past work performance

Review of attendance records

Review of driving history

Review of past internal investigations pertaining to complaints of “excessive use of force”

Review of past sustained violations of departmental policies and procedures

Review of report writing accuracy and completeness

Top Secret Federal Background Investigation

Failure to pass the Federal Background Investigation will result in removal from the Unit.

Secondary Discipline Review will occur at the time of transfer.  (The list will be re-ranked, if necessary, to account for both new discipline and expired discipline.)

The eligibility list for the DEA Task Force assignment is good for one (1) year from the date following the conclusion of the selection process, when the Certified Eligibility List is published.

Applicants must have completed any probationary period for their current position to be selected.  An applicant that may meet the minimum qualifications during the life of this certification list but is currently ineligible due to probation, prior assignment or length of service is still encouraged to apply to be put on the eligible list for future consideration with a date of eligibility.

Sworn employees not maintaining Unit standards are subject to reassignment at the discretion of the Chief of Police in accordance with the APDEA CBA Article VI, Section 13.
