Job Description

The Department of Corrections, Division of Administrative Services, is recruiting for a Payroll Services Supervisor position located in Juneau, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

The Payroll Supervisor manages the Department of Corrections’ payroll operations and provides leadership and direction to technical staff responsible for payroll and leave processing, as well as personnel transaction support.

The position oversees the review, entry, and certification of personnel actions and payroll documents within the State of Alaska Payroll System, ensuring compliance with AS 37.05.020.

You will supervise a small team of 2 HR technicians, ensuring timely and accurate processing, auditing, and reconciliation of all pay and service-related actions for multiple divisions.

Through staff, the supervisor ensures completion of payroll reconciliations, payroll and leave activity reporting, and resolution of discrepancies.

You will act as the agency’s primary payroll certifier, maintaining strong internal controls and data integrity, and handling complex payroll tasks while training staff to grow their capabilities.

Technical Competence: Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one's job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues.

Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible experience in payroll services, human resource management, business administration, supporting management in running an organization/enterprise or supporting professionals working in human resources (such as recruitment, payroll, classification and compensation, employee and labor-management relations, employer provided benefit programs, employment law compliance, or employee training).

Special Note:

“Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.

“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.

“Training” and “education” in this guidance are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.

“Progressively responsible” means indicating growth and/or advancement in complexity, difficulty, or level of responsibility.

"Human resource" includes experience in recruitment and selection, classification, employee training, employer provided benefits programs, employment law compliance, personnel, payroll processing or system administration, or labor relations.
