# Paralegal

Position Responsibilities:

Under direct legal supervision, provides advanced paralegal and administrative support for the Office of Legal Affairs to include:

General paralegal and administrative duties

Prepare first drafts of correspondence and legal documents such as contracts, motions, pleadings, discovery requests, and responses.

Finalize and file documents with courts or government agencies as required.

Gather, review, and organize files and information related to litigation or internal investigations.

Facilitate effective communication between staff and attorneys. Cultivate a positive work environment for attorneys and staff. Work collaboratively with counsel as well as colleagues at ANTHC and throughout the Alaska Tribal Health System.

Project management duties

Assist assigned attorneys in entering new projects into Asana or other project management applications.

Regularly round with attorneys to ensure all current projects are entered into and updated in the project management application and to identify project next steps and deadlines, and track both in the project management application

Identify and consolidate duplicative projects in project management applications.

Policy and procedure management duties

Triage policies and procedures through the ANTHC policy portal.

Assign policies and procedures to attorneys and follow up with them to ensure policies and procedures are reviewed in a timely manner.

Ensure all policies and procedure projects are added to Asana or other project management applications.

Legal guardianship duties

Answer questions from ANMC staff regarding the scope or validity of potential guardianships.

Work with attorneys to file legal guardian petitions when applicable.

Cross-departmental duties

Works with IGA and Legal on negotiation documents each fiscal year for pre and final negotiations.

Assists Finance with annual audits. Prepares and files State of Alaska corporation filings for all subsidiaries of ANTHC.

Scheduling duties

Coordinates meetings; reserves meeting spaces.

Makes travel arrangements for attorneys in accordance with company policy and prudent business practices.

Perform department errands as needed.

Sorts and delivers mail; sends, receives and distributes faxes.

Prepares, processes and maintains records and assures completeness of files and paperwork. Manages records retention, including information storage and retrieval. Maintains assigned attorneys’ memberships and dues.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

Knowledge of legal and administrative processes and practices.

Knowledge of court rules and procedures.

Knowledge of legal terminology, calendaring/docketing, case management, discovery, and trial preparation.

Knowledge of legal professional responsibility requirements.

Knowledge of tribal culture and politics.

Knowledge of privacy laws and regulations.

Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.

Skill in operating office equipment, including a personal computer utilizing a variety of software and database applications.

Skill in providing advanced administrative support.

Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.

Skill in oral and written communication, and addressing sensitive issues with individuals with a wide array of political, social, cultural and educational backgrounds.

Skill in organization, time management and meeting deadlines.

Skill in legal research methods.

Skill in technical writing and presentation preparation.

Skill in maintaining confidentiality.

Skill in developing office and data management systems.

Skill in managing complex projects.

Skill in preparing court documents and providing litigation support.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Associate’s degree in paralegal studies, government/political science, business or other related field. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Non-supervisory – Two (2) years of paralegal experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION - National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) Certified Paralegal (CP®)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - Some travel may be required.
