Job Description

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Office Assistant 1 position at Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) in Mackenzie Point, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

Under the supervision of the Administrative Officer 2, this position is responsible for a variety of administrative and reception-related duties, including but not limited to:

Supporting the Office Assistant 2 Scheduler with scheduling tasks

Answering and directing calls for inmate telephonic court appearances, attorney communications, and public inquiries, ensuring they reach the appropriate departments

Providing reception coverage and general clerical support for the facility as needed as well as regularly updating the GCCC employee contact list

Updating the Department of Corrections phone book for GCCC, providing copies to department heads and keeping the updated copy in the shared folder for staff

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Goose Creek Correctional Center is a minimum/medium custody facility that houses up to 1500 inmates and employs over 350 staff. You will be working in an office environment with other staff daily, with the potential of working around inmates.

Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking in to account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and response appropriately.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.;

OR

Acceptance in full standing by an accredited college (this includes acceptance in a concurrent enrollment or dual enrollment program);

OR

A Career Readiness Certificate with ACT WorkKeys® scores of skill level 3 or higher in: Graphic Literacy (formerly Locating Information), Applied Math, and Workplace Documents (formerly Reading for Information).

Special Note:

ACT WorkKeys® skill testing and career readiness certification is available at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Alaska Job Centers.

"Acceptance in full standing" means acceptance to a post-secondary program by a college or university and does not require enrollment or participation in the program. This includes acceptance in a program offering college credits while in high school, or both high school and college credits, but does not include taking advanced placement courses in high school.

Some positions in this class require the incumbent operate a State vehicle. Such positions require the selected candidate possess a valid driver's license and be 18 years of age or older on or before the first day of employment.

EDUCATION

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

WORK EXPERIENCE

If using work experience not already documented in your application, also provide the employer name, your job title, dates of employment, and whether full-or part-time. Applications will be reviewed to determine if the responses are supported and minimum qualifications are clearly met. If they are not, the applicant may not advance to the interview and selection phase of the recruitment.

PREA NOTIFICATION

The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:

Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;

Convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or

Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.
