# Lifeguard II - Training Position

Basic Function

This is a training position for those who do not fully meet the regular position requirements. Pay during the first six (6) months of the training period shall be at Step B of the original position’s grade level, or the incumbent’s hourly rate if higher. Pay for the remainder of the training period shall be at one grade below the normal classification grade, or the current B step pay if higher. Employees in a training position are eligible for step movement. The successful applicant must meet the minimum requirements and satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position within twenty four (24) months; if the requirements are met earlier the employee shall be moved into the regular non-training position at that time.

Coordinates the provision of acquisition and processing services.Provide for the safety of spectators, participants, and staff involved in aquatic activities and present aquatic instructional programs.

Typical Duties

1. Monitor and enforce proper safety rules and activities in swimming area to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers.

2. Register students and perform aquatic instruction at all levels of aquatic programs.

3. Perform lifesaving and first aid procedures as needed.

4. Provide routine clean up, sanitation, and general maintenance in pool and locker room areas.

5. Perform chlorine and PH water testing and make chemical additions.

6. Responsible for opening/closing facility as required.

7. Complete daily attendance and revenue reports as required.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Eighteen (18) years of age at time of employment.

2. Must possess and maintain certification in Standard First Aid, Lifeguarding/Water Park Training, and CPR-PR as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent). (ORIGINAL CERTIFICATIONS MUST BE PROVIDED AT THE TIME OF INTERVIEW.)

3. Must be able to obtain Water Safety Instructor certificate within 12 months.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Ability to demonstrate all lifesaving and first aid skills as required by the position.

2. Demonstrated understanding of pool chemical requirements or 3 months of experience in testing and maintaining chemical balance.

OTHER

1. This position requires a criminal background investigation and fingerprinting.

2. A PROFICIENCY TEST MAY BE ADMINISTERED.

3. A minimum of 12 months of experience in a formal aquatic instruction environment must be achieved in order to successfully complete the training position.

Ordinary business contact with employees in division and continuous, routine public contact.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervisor responsibilities; directs work flow of permanent/ temporary/ seasonal/ volunteers; performs mostly routine duties with a few minor problems that must be resolved on own initiative with little immediate supervision; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require normal effort to recover.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

A recreation facility where conditions are pleasant; good, clean conditions with minor accident probability; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling (25-50 lbs.). Must be able to spend extended time periods in pool.

This position falls under the Borough’s Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
