Please check the definition below to determine if you qualify. The McLaughlin Youth Center is recruiting to fill a Juvenile Justice Counselor 3 position for the Secure Treatment Unit. What You Will Be Doing: The Secure Treatment Unit is a long-term treatment program for detained youth who require a more restrictive and highly structured program. This position's primary responsibility is leading full-time Juvenile Justice Counselor 1/2s, who are directly responsible for developing treatment plans, documenting treatment progress, and maintaining adequate security in the institution. This includes assisting in setting goals for professional development and improvement; motivating and monitoring them as they work on their goals; providing assistance, training, and constructive feedback; scheduling shift activities and setting priorities; being flexible and working well with others (staff and residents) even in difficult, sometimes stressful situations. In addition, successful candidates will influence, inspire, and transform the lives of juvenile offenders and their families through therapeutic programs that incorporate the restorative justice approach to community protection, offender accountability, and competency development. You will build strong relationships with the youth we serve and use these relationships to deliver skills through groups such as anger management, drug and alcohol education, and life skills. As part of a treatment team, you will work with residents on their individual treatment needs while maintaining the focus of the Division’s mission. You will ensure the security of residents, visitors, staff, and facility buildings during assigned shifts. The Work Environment You Can Expect: This position is located at the McLaughlin Youth Center, 2600 Providence Drive, Anchorage. This is a 24-hour facility and shift work is required. This can include evening and grave shifts in addition to working weekends and holidays. The required experience is met by service as a Juvenile Justice Counselor 2 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere. OR One year of experience administering, advising on, performing, or supervising adult or juvenile corrections, law enforcement, parole, probation, residential treatment casework, or social casework. OR One year of experience performing the full range of duties associated with the custody, security, and reformation of prisoners in an adult correctional institution. The required experience is met by service as a Correctional Officer 2 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere. Special Note: Prior to initial appointment, successful candidates for the Juvenile Justice Counselor are subject to a background investigation, criminal record check, and medical examination to determine the essential duties of the position can be safely performed. A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.
