This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

Example of Duties

Anchorage Police Sergeants provide direction and coordinate the activities of officers on an assigned shift or within an assigned unit; including briefings, uniform and equipment inspections, assignment of duties, managing major crime scene and tactical situations, case report review, maintaining duty rosters, investigating complaints against subordinate officers, preparing performance evaluations and other duties as assigned.

Supplemental Information:

Directly supervises ISU team members on their job performance. Direct, control, inspect, and maintain performance levels of personnel under his/her command. Conduct criminal investigations and internal investigations as required. Train personnel in various areas of Police work, provide direction and coordinate training. Work closely with other Patrol and Detective Sergeants. Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies and other groups as necessary. Write and brief Operational Plans.

The Investigative Support Unit (ISU) assists the APD detective division, crime suppression division, and patrol division with locating and apprehending violent criminals, and conducting crime suppression enforcement operations. Members of the ISU may conduct high intensity police operations, secure search warrant locations, locate suspects and witnesses, track down and arrest subjects with warrants and other duties as assigned in support of high profile APD investigations. Members work as part of team, as well as independently with little or no supervision. Demonstrate effective working relationships with team unit members, co-workers and supervisors. Complete accurate and legible reports. Members are expected to be highly self-motivated. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Except for opportunities to promote, a mandatory transfer will be required after five (5) years within the position

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Must possess a minimum of one

(1)

year as a Police Sergeant with the Anchorage Police Department.

At time of appointment, needs to be a current member of APD SWAT team and remain active in that position during their time as ISU Sergeant.

Must be able to perform all functions of a Police Officer.

Additional Important Information

The APD Selection Process will be as follows for this unit. The Selection Process includes evaluating and confirming applicant information and developing a ranked list by the following factors:

Oral Board (minimum 60% passing score).

Disciplinary Review.

Secondary Discipline Review will occur at time of transfer. (The list will be re-ranked, if necessary, to account for both new discipline and expired discipline.)

The eligibility list for the Investigative Support Unit (ISU) Sergeant is good for one (1) year from the date following the conclusion of the selection process, when the Certified Eligibility List is published.

Employees not maintaining Unit standards are subject to reassignment at the discretion of the Chief of Police in accordance with the APDEA CBA.

Sergeants are responsible for maintaining a professional working relationship including open dialogue and communication with the chain of command, their officers and employees of other partner agencies. Utilize a team-concept positive attitude with high standards of performance in support of the operational function of the Anchorage Police Department. Work effectively alone and/or in a team capacity.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
