Alaska Municipal League (AML)

Location: Juneau, Alaska (with flexibility for remote work elsewhere in Alaska or Washington)

Reports to: Grants Program Manager

Position Type: Full-time, Non-exempt (Eligible for Overtime)

Compensation Band: Band 2 – Program Coordinator ($65,000-$93,600 depending on experience)

About the Alaska Municipal League

AML envisions thriving Alaska communities empowered by local governments with resources that allow needs to be addressed. AML strengthens Alaska’s local governments by building capacity, sharing best practices, and advocating for community benefits. Our work supports municipalities and partners across Alaska in identifying and securing funding for local priorities.

Position Overview

AML seeks a Grants Coordinator to join its Grants Management team. This role will support communities in accessing and managing public and private funding and focuses primarily on grant writing and development in various sectors, including transportation, energy, water and wastewater, economic development, and health. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, highly organized, and motivated to help Alaska’s communities compete successfully for federal, state, and philanthropic funding.

The AML Grants Management team is a small but mighty contributor to AML programs and services. The team is comprised of 2-3 AML staff who may at any one time be collaborating with 1-3 contracted grant writers. The team works in a fast-paced environment that involves working on several proposals with competing deadlines. AML requires the grant writing team to produce high-quality proposal writing, often with limited input and with short turnaround times. The Grants Coordinator maintains significant responsibilities for keeping grant applications moving and for constructing large components of applications with minimal early review. Current focus areas for grant applications include infrastructure, energy, transportation, workforce, and rural health.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Community Outreach and Engagement

Research, identify, and track funding opportunities that align with community and AML priorities.

Research emerging trends in infrastructure, energy, transportation, workforce, and related sectors.

Support community outreach and engagement to strengthen local capacity.

Provide technical assistance to municipalities, Tribal governments, and state agencies throughout the grant lifecycle.

Participate in and present at AML workshops, virtual office hours, and webinars on community planning and grant writing best practices.

Contribute content to the AK Federal Funding website (akfederalfunding.org)

Proposal Coordination and Grant Development

Translate complex program requirements into clear, actionable steps for communities and partners.

Assist with proposal coordination, internal review, and submission logistics.

Write, edit, and prepare compelling, competitive grant applications across a variety of sectors, including transportation, energy, economic development, etc.

Contribute to AML’s development of grant resources, toolkits, and templates to streamline future applications.

Data Management and Tracking

Provide consistent and frequent data entry and tracking of grant applications and program metrics in a grant management database (GrantSeeker Pro). With time and training, will be expected to fully utilize GrantSeeker Pro to track progress and prepare successfully funded applications for transition to project management team.

Compliance and Reporting

May be responsible for tracking and managing the grant reporting process for quarterly and semi-annual grant reporting and other compliance duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Associate’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

Experience: Minimum of two years of professional experience in grant writing, technical writing, or program development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of federal, state, Tribal, and private grant programs.

Strong writing and editing skills with demonstrated success in developing winning proposals.

Ability to manage and prioritize a diverse workload in a fast-paced environment to meet strict and overlapping deadlines.

Skilled in research, organization, and time management with attention to detail.

Competence in Microsoft Office and grant management software.

Cultural awareness and ability to work effectively with Alaska’s diverse communities, including rural and remote areas.

Capacity to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, mission-driven team.

Work Environment: This position primarily operates in an office environment, with occasional travel to Alaska communities for meetings, training, or outreach. Travel may include visits to remote locations and require adaptability to variable conditions.

How to Apply: Submit a cover letter, resume, and two writing samples (preferably grant-related) to mary@akml.org with the subject line “Grants Coordinator Application.”

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
