Job Description

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of

Geological & Geophysical Surveys,

is recruiting for a Geologist 2 -

Surficial Geologic Mapper in Fairbanks, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

With guidance from project managers and other DGGS staff, collaborate on tasks to create geologic maps and associated digital data using GIS

Collect, compile, and analyze geologic data to support material resource and hazard assessments or other projects where surficial geologic data is necessary to help DGGS fulfill its mission and goals

Assist project managers and other DGGS staff with field season preparation.

Participate in helicopter-supported fieldwork to gather data supporting surficial geology-based investigations

With guidance from project managers and team leads, write reports and prepare figures and presentations to disseminate geologic information

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This permanent seasonal position is based out of DGGS main office in Fairbanks, Alaska, with summer fieldwork of 2 weeks to 3 months, often helicopter-supported in remote Alaska. The daily work environment is generally desk-based, but open and collegial, allowing coordination among DGGS staff. Pending approval, the position can be hybrid teleworking with a minimum of 50% time required at the main DGGS offices per week.

We are looking for a candidate who possesses the following position-specific competencies.

Geospatial Science: Knowledge of concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the collection, storage, analysis, visualization, and distribution of geographic-based data and maps.

Manages and Organizes Information: Identifies a need; gathers, organizes, and maintains information; determines its importance and accuracy, and communicates it by a variety of methods.

Partnering: Develops networks and builds alliances; collaborates across boundaries to build strategic relationships and achieve common goals.

Scientific Research: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of scientific principles related to environmental, ecological, biological, or physical science and the methods and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry, including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, and the reporting of results.

Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: Uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering.

AND

One year of entry professional level experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering. This experience is met by service as a Geologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in any science major, which includes the completion of 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in the above geoscience fields and 24 additional semester hours (36 quarter hours) of course work in natural sciences, may substitute for the education requirement.

Equivalent combinations of professional experience and graduate level education in the geoscience fields described above are acceptable and will be considered as follows: 24 graduate semester hours=one full year of graduate education=one full year of professional experience.

SPECIAL NOTICES

May require travel within the state to transport samples, fieldwork, meetings, presentations, or other project-related work. (Frequency and duration vary. Fieldwork is most common between May and September and may last 3-4 weeks at a time, though 1-2 weeks is more typical)

Requires occasional lifting of boxes and a backpack weighing up to 50 lbs.

Conducting fieldwork requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition in support of remote field investigations and associated travel.

Working in an environment where there may be dust from handling and describing sediment samples.
