Job Summary

Alaska X is seeking an experienced Maintenance Manager to oversee a dynamic maintenance team in Skagway, Alaska. In this full-time, year-round position, you'll manage a diverse staff of mechanics, carpenters, and laborers while staying hands-on with the maintenance and repair of over 100 pieces of equipment—from airporter buses and ATVs to passenger vessels, outboard motors, and heavy machinery. Your expertise in both mechanical and carpentry work will ensure the functionality and reliability of Alaska X's extensive fleet and facilities.

Main Job Responsibilities:

Management & Oversight:

Supervise and coordinate a team of maintenance staff including mechanics, carpenters, and laborers

Delegate work assignments and monitor performance and productivity

Conduct staff training and development

Maintain communication and collaboration across departments

Keep comprehensive logs of maintenance work and issues

Report on equipment status and maintenance concerns

Mechanical Maintenance & Repair:

Inspect machines, engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems; run diagnostic tests to identify issues

Conduct repairs and preventative maintenance to ensure maximum reliability

Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner

Assemble machines and mechanical components according to specifications

Replenish fluids and replace worn components in engines and machinery

Clean, lubricate, and maintain machinery components

Repair hydraulic, electrical, and other mechanical systems

Provide consultation to equipment users on proper maintenance and preventative measures

Maintain detailed records of all work performed

Carpentry & Construction:

Read blueprints, drawings, and sketches to understand project requirements

Take measurements and calculate materials needed

Cut, shape, and smooth lumber and other materials according to specifications

Build and assemble window frames, doors, staircases, and frame buildings

Install flooring, roofing, and drywall with proper leveling and compatibility

Carve, assemble, and install furniture, cabinets, shelves, and other items

Build scaffolding and other construction structures

Inspect buildings and structures; conduct repairs and maintenance as needed

Perform painting, coating, and finishing work on vehicles and structures

General Maintenance:

Perform routine maintenance on roads, buildings, and miscellaneous structures

Undertake additional duties as assigned (e.g., painting, specialized repairs)

Adhere to all safety guidelines and company policies

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Mechanical:

Excellent knowledge of machinery, hydraulic, electrical, and other mechanical systems

Proficiency with hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers, wrenches, etc.) and precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.)

Ability to read technical documents, blueprints, and instruction manuals

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities

Commitment to all health and safety guidelines

Strong communication skills

Excellent physical strength and stamina

Carpentry:

Excellent understanding of carpentry techniques, installation methods, and construction practices

Proficiency with electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers, etc.)

Ability to read technical documents and drawings

Knowledge of carpentry materials and their properties

Attention to detail and precision in measurements and installations

General:

Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail

Ability to work hands-on while managing others

Strong organizational and time management skills

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Good understanding of basic mathematics

Good communication skills and fluent English

Qualifications:

Required:

Valid driver's license (Required)

Able to lift up to 50 lbs (Required)

Legally eligible to work in the US (Required)

21 years or older (Required)

First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain certification (Required)

Proven experience as a mechanic (Required)

Proven experience as a carpenter (Required)

High school diploma or equivalent (Required)

Preferred:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to acquire one (Preferred)

ASE or equivalent mechanical certification (Preferred)

Completion of vocational school training or apprenticeship program (Preferred)

Prior supervisory or management experience (Preferred)

Working Conditions:

Mix of indoor shop work and outdoor work in varying weather conditions

Exposure to machinery noise, vibrations, and equipment operation

Exposure to lubricants, hydraulic fluids, paint, and other chemical substances

Potential exposure to dust, metal shavings, and other particulates

Work in temperature-controlled shops and outdoor environments

Frequent interaction with equipment and tools

Physical Requirements:

Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly

Excellent physical condition and stamina for manual labor

Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing

Manual dexterity and fine motor control for precision work

Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights when necessary

Comfortable using vibrating tools and heavy equipment

Standard full-time hours, may include emergency repairs and overtime as needed
